In this powerful reflection, Sri Sri Ravishankar ji reminds us that yoga is not merely a physical exercise. It is a sacred science of inner transformation — a path revealed by ancient sages through deep meditation and lived realization. What we often see today in the West — yoga fused with beer, goats, loud music, or sensual display — may be creative movements, but they are not yoga.

Why not?

Because yoga, in its essence, is not about external stimulation or entertainment. It is about stilling the mind, returning to the source within, and awakening a higher consciousness.

As Ravishankar ji says, when yoga is stripped of its spiritual roots and turned into just another fitness trend, we risk losing the soul of the practice. The original intent of yoga was never simply to sweat or stretch — but to align the body, breath, mind, and spirit, to realize one’s true Self, beyond ego and illusion.

The term yoga means union — of the individual self with the universal. This journey requires discipline (tapasya), mindfulness (dhyana), breath regulation (pranayama), and moral grounding (yamas and niyamas). When these pillars are ignored, what remains is an empty shell — attractive perhaps, but ultimately unfulfilling.

Integral to this journey are mantras and sacred symbols like Om. These are not mere sounds or icons — they are vibrational keys that help shift our consciousness. Chanting Om harmonizes the body and mind with the universe. It’s the primordial sound — the echo of creation itself — and when invoked with awareness, it awakens the subtle layers of our being.

Mantras are like spiritual medicine. Each syllable holds energy. Repetition (japa) stills the restless mind and connects us to divine intelligence. Without these, yoga becomes disconnected from its roots in Nada (sound) and Bhava (feeling) — the deeper limbs of the practice.

Je le croyais, moi aussi.
Le premier fois quand j’ai lu les YogaSutras.
J’étais curieux… peut être même un peu sceptique.
Mon monde tournait vers l’extérieur, courir, prouver, accomplir. Mais quelque chose à changé.

Aujourd’hui je comprends Atha non comme un moment, mais comme une disposition intérieure.

Le yoga ne commence pas autour de nous,
il commence en nous «quand on est prêt à se regarder en face, à s’asseoir avec la vérité, à marcher vers l’intérieur ».

Et j’aimerais marcher ce chemin avec vous!🚶‍♂️

The Night of Awakening: Why Mahashivratri is the Most Powerful Night in Yoga

On this sacred night, when the cosmos aligns, the energy on Earth is at its peak. Mahashivratri, the 'Great Night of Shiva,' is more than just a festival – it's an opportunity for spiritual awakening.

According to ancient yogic traditions, it is the night when Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction – the Tandava. It symbolizes the end of darkness and ignorance, paving the way for spiritual growth and enlightenment.

But why is this night so powerful?

On this night, the planetary positions create a natural upsurge of energy in the human system, making it the most potent night for meditation, yoga, and chanting. When practiced with a straight spine, the upward energy flow leads to heightened consciousness, spiritual awakening, and inner transformation.

This is why yogis and spiritual seekers stay awake, meditate, and chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' throughout the night, aligning themselves with the divine cosmic energy. It is believed that one who remains wakeful and meditative on this night attains liberation from ignorance and negativity.

Yoga teaches us that the mind, much like the body, needs stillness and silence to cultivate awareness. When we quiet the noise of our thoughts, distractions, and external chaos, we open ourselves up to hearing the subtler truths, our inner voice, intuition, and the present moment. This is why practices like Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses) and Dhyana (meditation) are so central to yoga. They help us cultivate an inner silence that allows us to perceive the world and ourselves more clearly, without the filters of overthinking or stress.

In asana practice, silence allows us to listen to our body’s needs, where tension resides, where ease is found, and how the breath flows through each movement. Similarly, during Pranayama (breath control), the quieter we become, the more attuned we are to the rhythm of our breath, which in turn, centers and calms the mind.

Through silence, we learn to observe without judgment, cultivating Ahimsa (non-violence) towards ourselves and others. Silence in yoga is not about absence but about presence, being fully in the moment, allowing ourselves to listen, understand, and respond from a place of deep awareness.

In a noisy world, yoga gives us tools to turn inward, where the most important sounds—the whispers of our own heart and soul—can be heard.

Breathing Technique:

In Padmasana, the key to unlocking its full potential lies in your breath. Here’s a simple breathing practice to deepen your experience:

Inhale Deeply - Begin by sitting in Padmasana, closing your eyes, and taking a slow, deep breath in through your nose. Fill your lungs with air, feeling your abdomen expand.

Hold the Breath - Gently hold your breath for a few seconds, allowing your body to absorb the energy of the inhalation.

Exhale Slowly - Exhale through your nose, releasing all tension. Let your abdomen contract as you breathe out, and feel the sense of relaxation flow through you.

Establish a Rhythm - Continue this pattern of deep inhalation, gentle retention, and slow exhalation. Aim for a 4:2:6 ratio—inhale for 4 counts, hold for 2 counts, and exhale for 6 counts.

This breathing technique, when practiced regularly, can calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and enhance concentration. Whether you’re starting your day or winding down, Padmasana paired with mindful breathing is the perfect way to center yourself
